On the 11th of August 2007, Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend were returning home when they have been the victims of a group of teenagers'hate crime. Sophie lost her life at 20 years old simply because she looked different.
Her boyfriend fell into a coma but survived his physical injuries.
They were targeted because they expressed their creativity through their styles.
Sophie Lancaster Foundation
Since the tragic death of her daughter, Sophie's mother created the Sophie Lancaster Foundation to change attitudes and laws about violence and hate crimes in the UK.
The foundation works on creating respect and understanding for subcultures, notably through workshops in schools and prisons. They provide information on hate crimes, intolerance and prejudice.
They also work with police forces and politicians to ensure that people from subcultures are protected by law.
The term "hate crime" previously reserved for racial hatred, xenophobia, gender, religion, disability or homophobia, includes alternative subcultures in the city of Manchester since 2013 and several other cities in the UK followed its example.
We invite you to visit the Sophie Lancaster Foundation page to learn more about their work to eradicate prejudice, hatred and intolerance around the world.
